Make the background transparent

Keep your marks and let another surface show through.

Export just the marks so another surface can show through. A transparent tile is useful for a colored digital layout, but it does not remove pale inks or automatically create white ink for printing.

These are actual outputs of the studio’s drawing and repeat functions. They are reference compositions, not screenshots of physical products. Your hand-drawn marks will vary.

Download the reference tile ↓

The download is the first example’s repeating unit, not the full preview. It opens in SVG-compatible applications; the studio does not import files.

01 / Set up your drawing

Make a simple two-ink drawing on a light background. Use offset 0%, scale 100%, and rotation 0° for the first export. Note the current background color before turning on Transparent, so you can compare the opaque and transparent versions.

02 / Make the example

Enable Transparent and download SVG. Download PNG at a 2048 selection as well. The export omits the background rectangle, while keeping the drawn paths and their own opacity. Marker and Pencil remain translucent. Place the file over a dark rectangle in a layout or image application to see what is actually transparent.

03 / Compare and refine

A solid Pen leaf stays solid on the dark surface. A Marker line mixes visually with the color beneath it. If the reference looks different on white and dark backgrounds, that is expected: transparency changes how the same ink is seen. Try a pale ink when you need clear contrast on a dark surface, then compare again on your final background.

If the result feels off

A viewer may display transparent pixels as white, black, or a checkerboard. That display alone does not tell you whether the file has a background. Test by placing it over another colored object. A flat screenshot can remove transparency; use the actual SVG or PNG download. Avoid JPEG when you need alpha transparency, since JPEG does not preserve it.

Check the finished file

Keep a copy of both opaque and transparent exports with distinct filenames. For physical printing, transparent areas normally show the paper or material color. Printing white marks on dark material requires a suitable print process; a white shape in a file does not make an ordinary home printer deposit white ink. Ask your printer about the material and ink process before ordering.
